Why should I Really Know Myself Before Starting a Business?

“an entrepreneur is someone who is the founder, owner, and manager of a small business and whose principal purpose is growth”

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, you need to take a hard look at yourself before starting a new business. Don’t assume you will be happier and make more money starting the business of your dreams.

An analysis of 23 research studies published under the title The Big Five Personality Dimensions and Entrepreneurial Status  found that entrepreneurs have different personality traits than corporate managers, scoring far higher on traits such as openness to experience (curiosity, innovation) and conscientiousness (self-discipline, motivation) and considerably lower on neuroticism, which allows them to better tolerate stress.

Do you have the qualities of an ENTREPRENEUR?

Ask yourself the right questions, and you can determine if you have the qualities of an entrepreneur. No one else has the answers. What you need to know about yourself is already inside you. When you understand yourself well enough, you’ll be able to decide whether you are truly entrepreneurial.

If you think you have the personality to be an entrepreneur… Congratulations!

What Skills Are Needed to Start a Business?

“A small business owner can have the dedication to succeed, but without training and business experience, it can be an overwhelming challenge to achieve results.”

Starting a business is an important step in an entrepreneur’s life. Before opening that first business, you need to have a few skills that are essential to getting your business off the ground. Some business skills can be taught in a classroom, but in the end your skills must be tested with real-world experience.

There are several skills that are needed to start and run a business. It is important to identify the skills you need to develop or improve so that you can succeed in your day-to-day business operations. Some of these skills are:

  • Financial management

  • Marketing, sales and customer service

  • Communication and negotiation

  • Leadership

  • Project management and planning

  • Delegation and time management

  • Problem solving

Why are principles important to an entrepreneur?

“I think most people can learn a lot more than they think they can. They sell themselves short without trying. One bit of advice:  …make sure you understand the fundamental principles.” Elon Musk

Principles are a set of guidelines which should govern every aspect of our life, right from building a company up to working on your own confidence. Without wisdom we are doomed. And principles form an integral part of wisdom.

If you’re going to succeed in business, you must understand the principles that guide it. Most entrepreneurs make mistakes during the startup phase. The typical new business started in the United States is no longer in operation five years after being founded. That fact from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics has been true for decades.

Statistics indicate that many startup firms manage to struggle successfully through the first year or two of their existence. However, something happens soon after. Sales level off, margins decline, cash flow stalls, and competitors begin to pay attention to that early success. Only a few entrepreneurs survive this critical period, or, in other words, manage to get over the “brick wall”. This brick wall is the critical boundary between an Emerging entrepreneur and Emergent entrepreneur.

We believe that there are fundamental principles for overcoming the brick wall and making the transition to sustained growth. Successful entrepreneurs are the ones who implement these principles.

If you think you are following the right principles to be an entrepreneur… Congratulations!

Why do my ethics matter in business?

“There are no moral shortcuts in the game of business or life. There are, basically, three kinds of people, the unsuccessful, the temporarily successful, and those who become and remain successful. The difference is character.”

Ethics are defined by an individual’s moral judgments about right and wrong. The decision to behave ethically is a moral one; entrepreneurs must decide what they think is the right course of action. This may involve rejecting the route that would lead to the biggest short-term profit.

It is clear that businesses without ethics are businesses at risk.

Good ethical practices by companies lead to increased trust, and trust is something that cannot be replaced or achieved easily. When a business builds its foundation on trust and good ethical practices, what follows is an increase in effectiveness and efficiency. Some companies fail to see this and blindly rush after profits. For them, their only bottomline is greater and bigger profits, at any cost. What they don’t realize is that by doing so, they are endangering the entire chain that will lead to good profits for them in the long run. Entrepreneurs need to have a BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW which shows that God is over ALL.

If you think you have the right ethics and values to be an entrepreneur… Congratulations!
